Below is a list of Japanese terms used to describe the most common\u00a0techniques in Karate.<\/p>\n

Jodan<\/strong> – Head or upper level<\/p>\n

Chudan<\/strong> – Stomach or middle level<\/p>\n

Gedan<\/strong> –\u00a0Lower level<\/p>\n

DACHI – STANCE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Heiko-Dachi<\/strong> – Natural\/Yoi Stance<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Heisoku-Dachi<\/strong> – Feet together<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Musubi-Dachi<\/strong> – Heels together, toes at 45 degrees.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Zenkutsu-Dachi<\/strong> – Front Stance<\/p>\n

Front leg bent with knee over front foot. Back leg straight. \u00a0Feet shoulder width apart. The front foot must face forward with the rear foot facing in the front direction as much as possible. Don\u2019t lean forward.<\/p>\n

Weight Distribution: Front Leg – 60% \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Back Leg – 40%<\/p>\n

Kokutsu-Dachi<\/strong> – Back Stance<\/p>\n

From \u2018Yoi\u2019 Dachi, the left or right leg slides out into back stance with the heels in line and the feet at right angles with the knees bent and back kept upright, the arms are crossed in front of the chest and in an inwards\/outwards motion the arms perform \u2018Kaka-Wake-Uke\u2019.<\/p>\n

Weight Distribution: Front Leg – 30% \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Back Leg – 70%<\/p>\n

Kiba-Dachi<\/strong> – Straddle\/Horse Stance<\/p>\n

From \u2018Yoi\u2019 Dachi, the left leg is slid out to double shoulder width. \u00a0Both feet facing forward, knees pushed out and back straight.<\/p>\n

Weight Distribution: 50% – 50%<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Shiko-Dachi<\/strong> – Like Kiba-Dachi but with both feet facing outwards at 45 degrees.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Neko-Ashi-Dachi<\/strong> – Cat Stance<\/p>\n

From \u2018Yoi\u2019 Dachi, the right foot on the toe moves in a small arc (inwards \u2013 out), the back is kept straight, with both knees well bent. The right hand comes over and down in a slapping motion to Chudan level as the left hand scoops back towards the body as if catching a foot.<\/p>\n

Weight Distribution: Front Leg – 10%\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Back Leg – 90%<\/p>\n

Uchi-Hachiji-Dachi<\/strong> – Feet shoulder width apart, toes facing inwards at 30-45 degrees, knees tense.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Renoji-Dachi<\/strong> – ‘L’ Stance, feet are shoulder width apart, with the front foot facing forward\u00a0and rear foot facing outwards at 90 degrees.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Kosa-Dachi<\/strong> – Cross Stance<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fudo-Dachi\/Sochin-Dachi<\/strong> – Unshakable Stance<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BLOCKING TECHNIQUES<\/span><\/h4>\n

UKE –\u00a0BLOCK<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Gedan-Barai<\/strong> –\u00a0Downward Block<\/p>\n

From the \u201cYoi\u201d position, the blocking arm is raised over the opposite shoulder and swung downwards in an arc towards the leg stepping forward into Zenkutsu Dachi. \u00a0Use both arms when blocking. \u00a0Stop fist just 6\u201d above the knee.<\/p>\n

Hips: Hanmi (45 degrees).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Age-Uke<\/strong> –\u00a0Rising Block<\/p>\n

The forearm and fist is positioned in front of forehead straight. The forearm is angled down from the wrist to the elbow.<\/p>\n

Hips: Hanmi (45 degrees).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Soto-Uke\u00a0<\/strong>– Outside Block<\/p>\n

Often used for attacks to middle level. \u00a0The arm travels inward from the outside of the body. \u00a0Forearm vertical, elbow same level as Gedan-Barai and Uchi-Uke. \u00a0When moving into stance, reach behind body with blocking arm. \u00a0Block centre.<\/p>\n

Hips: Hanmi (45 degrees).<\/p>\n

Uchi-Uke<\/strong> – Inside Block<\/p>\n

As above this block is used for attacks to the middle level.\u00a0 The arm travels outward from the inside of the body.\u00a0 Forearm vertical, elbow same level as Gedan-Barai.\u00a0 Block centre.<\/p>\n

Hips: Hanmi (45 degrees).<\/p>\n

Shuto-Uke\u00a0<\/strong>– Knife hand block<\/p>\n

From \u2018Yoi\u2019 Dachi, step forward with left leg into Ko-Kutsu Dachi and in an arc from right shoulder, the open left hand swings down to Chudan level, pull back right hand (open) to solar plexus.<\/p>\n

Hips: Hanmi (45 degrees).<\/p>\n

Tate-Shuto-Uke<\/strong> – Vertical Knife Hand Block (Arm Straight)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Kakewaki-Uke<\/strong> –\u00a0Wedge Block<\/p>\n

Choku-Zuki<\/strong>\u00a0– Static straight Punch<\/p>\n

Punch centre, shoulders down, chest square.<\/p>\n

Oi-Zuki<\/strong> –\u00a0Stepping\/Lunge Punch<\/p>\n

As Choku-Zuki but utilise hip rotation. \u00a0Keep hips low when moving forward. \u00a0Don\u2019t turn front foot to the side. \u00a0Bend ankle, keep foot flat.<\/p>\n

Gyaku-Zuki<\/strong> – Reverse Punch<\/p>\n

As Choku-Zuki but utilise hip rotation. \u00a0Don\u2019t lean forward. Don\u2019t move front knee.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Kizami-Zuki\u00a0<\/strong>– Leading side Punch<\/p>\n

Snapping punch typically directed to \u00a0upper level.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

UCHI – STRIKE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Empi-Uchi\u00a0<\/strong>– Elbow strike<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mawashi Empi-Uchi<\/strong> – Roundhouse Elbow Strike<\/p>\n

Ushiro Empi-Ucho<\/strong> – Reverse Elbow Strike<\/p>\n

Mae-Geri<\/strong> – Front Kick<\/p>\n

Lift knee of kicking leg to height required. Pull toes back, kick and push forward with the hip at the same time striking with the ball of the foot. Snap foot back after kicking. \u00a0Keep supporting foot flat ensuring the leg is slightly bent.<\/p>\n

Yoko-Geri<\/strong> – Side Kick<\/p>\n

Lift knee of the kicking leg in front and twist 90 degrees on the other leg. Kick with the outer edge of the foot (Keage – Snap), bottom of foot (Kekomi \u2013 Thrust), snap back kicking leg returning it to the front.\u00a0 Keep heel up, toes down and use supporting leg.<\/p>\n

Mawashi-Geri\u00a0<\/strong>– Roundhouse Kick<\/p>\n

Lift knee of kicking leg behind body fully cocked. Parallel with the floor, swing leg forward with a smooth hip rotation, snap back kicking leg, keep the supporting leg bent, foot flat, kick with ball of the foot.<\/p>\n

Ushiro-Geri<\/strong> – Reverse Kick<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hiza-Geri<\/strong> – Knee Kick<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mikazuki-Geri<\/strong> – Crescent Kick<\/p>\n

Kakato-Geri<\/strong> – Axe Kick<\/p>\n
